Hiya Lads,

Your best bet would be to do some research and compare what you're going to offer with others already in the market (of which there are many). Try looking at some of the following: 1and1, fuitadnet, bigbluehost, network solutions, godaddy (yes, they have hosting too), iPowerWeb, ProHosting, etc etc etc.

Hum....only one 9 in your uptime guarantee huh?

Thanks for your input, what do you mean by this comment?

I have looked around similar companys 1&1 especially, i am thinking about doing a special offer (limited time) and doing a very good offer, as a promotion.

I think he means you only have 99.9% uptime enstead of 99.99%.

If you want you can bounce prices off of paleckhosting.com but i would recomend looking at the big sites, not a small site like myself.

I was really just giving you a hard time! biggrin.gif

If you're talking about reliability of an enterprise class or data center network, 99.9% uptime isn't very good. When we evaluate the networks we support/design and evaluate data centers we look for 99.999% availability.

Thats a datacenter. They better have more uptime, but as things get passed through more hands (datacenter-->some company sellings servers-->your hosting site) then you tend to sometimes lose that almost perfect uptime, especially if you are a small hosting company.

Yeah, sorry i was meant to put 99.99% uptime

This is my current uptime for this month: 99.773% (SiteUpTime.com)

Alpha, the fact that your on a free host doesnt really help in him determining prices.

if you can get a better package for free it should set alarm bells ringing

Free hosts lack things paid hosts have. Customer support, speed, features, etc.

Well, I'm with Startlogic, with a 5 gig storage limit and 100 gig bandwidth. You can get more info on my package here.

I signed up during a promotional thing, so I'm paying $2.50 USD per month and got free setup and a domain. Basically everything on the info page is the same as my package except the bandwidth and storage.
mmoseley
Ahhh i see, thanks for that QuantumRand(), thats quite helpful actually, i think im going to do a promontion for a bit see if that works.

How much would you guys pay for...
  • 10GB Disk Space
  • 100GB Monthly Bandwidth
  • Unlim FTP Accounts
  • Unlim MySQL Databases
  • Free Setup

Let Me Know! Cheers
Bloodflame
since i've already got hosting, i personally don't need any more. but for those features, i'd pay about $5-7 a month, maybe $10 if a domain was also included.

Assuming it comes with all of the usual hosting accesories, $4.99 USD per month or somewhere around there would be an appropriate price (with some sort of year long commitment). For a promotional thing, maybe offer it for $2.99 per month with a 12 month commitment.

If you REALLY wanted to grab attention, you could offer those prices without any sort of commitment and simply do it month to month. It'll steal the attention of people who are curious about web hosting, but not in a serious manner. There are A LOT of those people, but you cannot rely on them as any sort of steady income.

Another benefit of month to month is the fact that people aren't locked into prices, so what may start at $2.99 can easily be changed to $4.99, but at the risk of losing the customer.

Basically, I've noticed that all of the big hosting companies advertise exorbitantly good rates, such as $2.49 for 5 gigs and 100 gigs transfer, but they dont mention that the 2.49 rate is only avaialable with a 2 year contract. Month to month on a plan like that would generally go for $6.99 or so.

Your price should also be based of something to make you a profit or atleast break even. So even if you lower your prices later you want to make sure that they are high enough to make you money. The other thing is how many people are gonna use what they pay for. This is all random. If you have people who want to use all of the space and bandwidth then you cant over sell. If you assume that they are all only gonna use half on average of the space and bandwidth then you can over book it. Also, I think want a market. Who is your target? There are so many hosting providers you need to specialize. I am a GSP (Game Server Provider). Do you want to focus on your great customer support or your quick setup time. Focus on what makes you difrent and how a small hosting company is better than a larger site. As for your question the 2 key things are 10GB Disk Space and 100GB Monthly Bandwidth. You should make your price as low as you can but still making what ever profit you want. Factor in server cost and all of that.
