I'm looking to buy a laptop for about $1000 USD or less. The specs I'm looking for:

X700 or 6600 prefered, but a 9800 or 9700 would work (must have dedicated RAM)
60GB HDD (5400 or 7200 RPM),
512MB RAM minimum (would prefer DDR400, but 333 would do)
Pentium-M 7X0 (2MB cache) or Turion 3X (1MB cache)
14 inch or 15.4 inch wide screen (would prefer better than 1280X800)
Must be thin (3.5 cm max)

I've found a nice MSI whitebook (MS-1029) which would work well, but I'd like to know all of my options. If anyone knows of a notebook that matches my liking, let me know.

Edit: I forgot to mention Barebone notebooks (ones without a processor, HDD, or RAM). I'd be more than willing to get one of those. Less than $700 for a Pentium based notebook, and less than $800 for an AMD.

Thanks.

It does fit my criteria, but unfortunately, it's a Dell. I hate the way the make their systems completely un-upgradable (with the exception of upgrading with Dell equipment) and the loads of crap that comes preconfigured on the system. They make it almost impossible to install their drivers without sticking their crappy resource stealers on it too, and this isnt only Dell keep in mind. Pretty much all of the computer dealers who have TV commercials do it.

I'll look deeper into the XPS though. Thanks Tobb.

well if the hardware is what you want see if you can get it without a OS on it and it might come cheaper.

I dont think Dell ships any system without an OS.

Lol, I'm tempted to call them up just to ask them if they will. I might do that. I'll keep you updated, lol.

I have a Dell (PC) and your right comes loaded with plenty of memory hogging junk. But that is when you pop in your own Windows OS CD and format and re-install - then you can chose what to install, which drivers to install. wink.gif

Dont some of the drivers require you to also install some of their software? I know that Compaq requires you to install their mouse software to use the touchpad on their laptops.

@Tobb

I looked at the XPS in more detail...It has integrated Intel graphics...so sad.

They might do, can't say for sure.

Alright, I found what seems to be a perfect laptop. It's the Uniwill 259IA3. I'm not really sure what it may be priced at with a Pentium M 730/740 processor though since it has a somewhat obscur graphics card, the mobility 9700 256MB. An X700 of simular specs would cost around 1.2-1.3k, so I'd assume this would cost around that. Does anyone know anyone selling Uniwill notebooks, or maybe a more precise price for it?
