Full Version: Firmware Warning (Linksys WRT54G V.3)

Just wanted to give a quick shout out.

I have a WRT54G V.3. The current firmware is 4.20.7 - I'd highly suggest you do not go to this version. I'm not sure it affects other models the same way, but if you have a V.3 model, take this warning seriously.

For me, it's caused spottiness in the router. I'll be surfing fine and then all of a sudden I won't be able to surf at all until I go to the status page and hit the DHCP renew button. Then everything works again. Likewise, the router can go for as much as 1 or 2 days or as little as 10-30 minutes between when I have to hit the dhcp renew button.

I've done a variety of tests and I have taken several steps to make sure it's not my router hardware or my connection - and i'm positive it isn't either.

So if you own the WRT54G V.3, I'd suggest you keep your current firmware until another version is released. As a matte of fact, I wouldn't take a change with the V2s or the V3.1 either. It's not a critical issue, but is very annoying.

Wow, thanks for the heads-up Primal

I prefer an Intel card anyways, but thanx for the warning!

I thought it was just me, after I installed the firmware the router became almost unuseable. I went out and bought a WRT54GS and had to update the firmware in that and now no problems what so ever.

Well thank goodness I WROTE to linksys about the issue. The techie said she hadn't heard of any issues yet. I requested .6 thinking I'd just downgrade the firmware and things would be ok, and she gave it to me and told me to downgrade.
Here's the funny part - I chatted to live tech just after I sent the message to linksys - the live tech told me the router firmware CANNOT be downgraded. At which point I promptly wrote my previous post. I thought I and anyone else who updated would be screwed and would have to either wait on the next update or return the router. Then I got the email saying I COULD downgrade. I did just that and now it's working fine.

I've had pretty good luck with Linksys firmware, but for some reason every so often they'll release a version that just totally stinks. I have a WRT54GS and had issues after upgrading to new firmware and trying to use the protocol/port prioritization settings, my router would drop both wired and wireless connections for no reason after only a minute or two. New firmware was released a month later and I've had no problems since. Maybe this was just one of those releases...that never should've made it out of QA.

I use v4.20.6 - HyperWRT 2.1b1 (Rupan) with no problems....

Speaking of downgrading, I've had a similar problem with SMC drivers and firmware.

I tried upgrading the firmware for my router a while back. After two days of no connectivity, they told me to use an older version of the firmware. I thought it was odd...until now. biggrin.gif

I'm back to 4.20.6 now and it's working perfectly alright. I'm surprised but I wrote a thank you to the linksys person (ofcourse I doubt she got it, cuz it gets sent back to a pool), in there I asked them to let me know if they had been getting emails about it and the person who replied said that he'd gotten quite a few, from V.2 owners as well as V.3, so it's not just a V.3 issue. Seen a couple forums with complaining owners as well, so you're just lucky BSOD.

I hope they come out with a new one soon.

the best thing to do is not jump from 1 old build to the new ones...baby steps help trust me. I have that same router and it is 1000x better than my Wireless B one was.

That's what I did. I've gotten the firmware as they are released. I have .6 before and it was fine. But as soon as I put .7 on the router had issues. As I said, I just hope they come up with .8 soon, or another build cuz .6 is supposed to have a few vulnerabilities (though they don't affect me cuz I'm using the highest personal encryption possible). Just sux they let .7 out as it is. It needed more testing.

umm i've got the same router and i went from like v2 to v4.20.7 and to me it seems everything is great now, before i had probelms where bittorrent would cut my net off, but now my net seems tons better.

Then obviously you don't have the 'exact' same router. Although the routers take the same firmware, some of them have different chipsets inside. Some V1s, V2s and V3s will be based on the same/similar chipsets but some will slightly vary in some way. Kind of like hard drives that are sold directly to OEM vendors then stores which sell OEM drives.
You have a V2 router, not a V3 if you went from 2. When I got my router I was already at version 3 firmware (thus the v3 name). The V5 routers have completely different chipsets, which is why they have their very own firmware. There have also been reports that V1 routers don't like the new firmware either.
So some people are more lucky than others. Some of us have issues with the firmware and some don't.

Just thought I would drop a line to say thanks for the post. I have been experiencing the same issue with a Linksys WRT54G V.3 for the last couple of weeks and its been driving me nuts. Yours is the first post I've found on the web that actually suggests a resolution for this issue. I'll downgrade to 4.20.6, see how it goes and let you know if it solves the issue for me too.
Neoprimal you rock! Thanks again
