Have you guys noticed a trend of movie remakes lately? I'm trying to figure out which one started the trend. Let's see....there's The Longest Yard, The Fog, Amityville Horror....what else? There's supposed to be another Friday the 13th remake coming out soon too. Why all the remakes all of a sudden? Are directors running out of fresh material?

I think that could be the case. Either that or people who like the movies demand one. I know whenever they have remakes, regardless of how bad they are, i try to go see it. It is another way to make more money.

I think they are just running out of ideas. Singers are doing the same now by remaking songs from the past, a lot of rappers are doing this to the rock songs from before.

Low box office numbers show what people think about these movies.
You'll know when the end of the world is coming when a
Hip-Hop song is made using DEVO - Whip It

The movie companies are just running out of ideas. And although the remakes contain some nice special effects such as War of the Worlds, the stories created behind the effects are really getting bad in these remakes. The original War of the Worlds kept you guessing, thinking after the movie. What did the aliens look like? But the new one seemed to take focus away from the important focus of the movie and put emphasis on the sappy story line of a man and his relationship with his kids. Thats where these movies go bad. Especially when its a sci-fi movie. Remakes of old movies are alright, but enough with the twists and gay stories. The movie industry seems to be in the mindset that people can't think anymore so everything is explained leaving nothing for the imagination afterwards. Some of the best movies of all time have left the audience thinking, pondering, wondering. The original War of the Worlds for one, and Citizen Kane, another classic that left the audience with things to ponder. I don't mind the occasional remake here and there. There is always room for improvement in some of the classics, especially with the effects technology of today compared to when the original movie was created, but stay away from the sappy gay story lines and give the audience what they want.

What's even worse than a mere remake is when they take an average film like "Cheaper By the Dozen" which was originally made in 1950, and then remake it, and then make a sequel to the remake! Yes folks, "Cheaper By the Dozen 2" will be in theaters later this year.
On a positive note, there are still films like "Wallace and Grommit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit" being made that are unique and exciting (even if they charaters are not new).
