Do any of you use generic dvd-r/+r media for burning movies or data, or do you use only name brand? Normally, I use name brand, but it can get to be pretty expensive, so I try to hunt out sales. Right now Best Buy is selling a 50 pack of Sony dvd-r/+r media for $19.99. It's normally $39.99, but there is a $20 instant rebate. Anyway, I was looking at pricewatch.com and they have generic dvd-r media that is much cheaper. A 100 pack is $18. I'm wondering if it would be worth it.

I personally like Imation. I think they make the best media, whether it be CD-R/RW or DVD's. I have always been happy with Imation stuff.

i've used generic silver-top dvd media and i don't like it at all. maybe it was just the brand, but i almost always ran into burning problems, and i could only watch the output on my computer. only 1 dvd player out of a dozen i tried read the discs, and you gotta try hard.
i've had pretty luck with Fujifilm and Sony media though

i got a 50-pack of Sony 8x DVD+R's for an incredible deal (almost $15 after tax)

I use "Legacy" DVD-R (4x, I'm in no hurry), for PC stuff, from Newegg. I've only had about three bad burns out of over 100.
Verbatim for home DVD's.

would be interesting if someone has a list of who ACTUALLY manufactures each brand, as i know that some different brands are actually the same discs in different packaging

I use the cheapest pieces of crap I can find. Currently I have some TDK's, lol. So far I've never had any bad burns with the cheapies, and I'm not worried about how long they can hold their info since I pretty much only use them a couple of times before they're put in my collection, never to be seen again.

Verbertim, Sony and TDK. Hate Imation - it spoilt 3 drives.

I ordered some generic no-name brand online. They're rated for 8X, but if you try to burn over 4X, the burn fails. That's what I get for buying cheap media.

I used the Imation DVD-R to burn a movie on and it takes longer than I want for the movie to start. I switched to some Sony DVD-R and the movie starts quickly. I like to try different kinds though.

I have used Memorex from the day that I got my burner and I have no complaints with them. I have yet to have a coaster and I have been buying them on sale ($17 for 50 pack @ BB). I'm good on CD/DVD writing media for a good while.

I don't know which burning software you are using, but if it is Nero it is not recommended to burn at the highest speed available. I managed to have problems with CD I had burned to 52X (Princo, Memorex & TDK CD 52X compatible) which failed the data check. I personnaly burn my CD at like 32X and my DVD at 4X. It's might be a bit longer, but it's the price to pay to have the security of burning the data safely.

Until I bought cheap, no-name media, I've never had a single bad burn at full speed.
