2 days ago, my house got robed, and they stole my laptop amongt other things,

I was wondering if anyone knows a security software that can record through a web cam?

I'd like to install one. I just need to put up a security system so next time it happens, at least i'll have something to give to the cops, cuz they don't try really hard at helping ...

Thanks

Well, finally, something in my feild. There are a couple of options. You can get a ip camera, both wireless and hardwired. you could do a capture card and use professional grade security stuff. or you could use a stand alone type unit with a sd card that would record from motion.
there is a company called lennox wich makes a software for recording thrue capture card. of course you could just use any recording software to do this. make sure you allocate how much hard drive space you want to use. if you have questions or want any hardware let me know.

try google: Google Search

Dont mind me asking im not being funny, but if your are burgled again, and this webcam software is running, arent they just going to steal your computer anyway?

Dude, get a burglar alarm, a nice loud one aswell, and make sure its a wired one, dont get one of those radio signaled ones.

One thing to keep in mind about software that uses a webcam for security is that the program has to store the data somewhere. In your situation this probably would not help as the data would have been stored on the laptop which you no longer have.

Sorry to hear about your house being robbed. I would probably recommend a monitored buglar alarm to deter any future breakins. A camera is helpfull but most 'bargain' cameras for security that you can buy from a department store are bargains for a reason. Most have low resolution and can not see at night which in most cases will not help the police out. These types are used mostly for monitoring only and not actual recording.

Getting into higher security cameras such as ones made from Honeywell or Pelco will cost quite a lot of money ($300-$500) per camera and even more for an actual recorder, most of which are digital now and can cost a couple thousand for a high end one.

Get a burglar alarm.

your webcam software might have a motion detector in it. i have a logitech clicksmart which uses the ImageStudio software, and that has a motion detector. just a thought anyway. there's always google to find other programs.

sorry to hear about your loss, i could understand how pissed you'd be. check some pawn shops in your area (or even within a couple cities nearby), and see if any of your stuff comes up. if so, don't bother telling them, just ask to look at it. if its yours, call the police and tell them where you found it, and they'll do the rest, and hopefully catch the bastard that stole it.

Check <<HERE>> I Have this. It Does work. But, any good alarm, security system and Cameras are only good if you use them 24/7. A big hint... Signage it 78% a theft deterrant. If you have a sign, POST IT!

Thx all for the suggestions.

Ill try them out (software) and you guys know about it ...

I have severall computers at home (3), the burglar didn't took them problably cuz he was in the hurry, so he took the laptop. But I'm afraid that he'll come back with other people to steal the computers. Cuz he robed my house while nobody was home, and he broke the glass in way it made not aloud of noise, so i guess he was planning this since the beginning.

So im going to buy locks for computers and some webcams and use the security software to capture them bastards.

microsoft has a power toy that you could have your web cam take snapshots at time intervals. Its free but like posted earlier it wont help you if they steal the pc that has the snap shots.

I would suggest trying out ActiveWebcam www.pysoftware.com I have this software and have recorded over a 10 day period using my webcam. I am using the beta version of it but there is the full release of it also.

You'll have to keep a close eye if you decide to save recordings as it will eat alot of harddrive space up lol. You can also save the recording as a mpeg instead of it's own format so it will play on another machine from what I gather.

I remember reading an article on a British news station about something just like this. Some guy had his house broken into and his computer was stolen too. So, he set up a webcam that was motion activated. But the best part was the camera automatically sent snapshots to his email address once activated, and he was notified by pager. Sure enough, the burgler struck again one night while the owner was away from home. The shapshots sent to his email address gave picture-perfect closeups of the burgler, who wasn't wearing a mask. Cops nabbed him within hours. On a side note, the owner was also a software developer and created the software he used to do this.

Sorry about your loss sad.gif .

I agree with Singh400, get a nice loud alarm system one with the real hi pitch noise that drives you up the wall. Mine got set off by accident one day and the thing drove me nuts!
