Yesterday, /. linked to our NeroLinux/k3b review. Today, a database error. Not sure if the two are related.

i was lonely and cried sad.gif
BlueScreenOfDeath
guys the downtime was a result of the us being slashdot'd ...i dunno if the db couldnt take it or what the specifics are...we've been slashdot'd before and never knocked us down but im sure the admins can explain exactly what happened.
Singh400
Yup slashdotted.
nvyseal4u
Slashdotted again last nite and today because of a Google X image
Gsurface
We got /.ed twice yesterday. The first time caused some downwtime. A few hours later, we got /.ed again for the Google X image and that really brought the server to its knees.
mmoseley
o great!! :S hope it doesnt happen agen!!!! blink.gif

BlueScreenOfDeath
Dual 2.8 Xeons
soldier1st
well lets hope this doesen't happen alot or very little.
BlueScreenOfDeath
it doesnt happen alot, we can usually stand a /. load ...especially on our 2.8 Dualie ...i dunno if it could take 2 back to back ... lol hey G maybe we need to investin in Itanium 2's
oubipaws
This kind of stuff is to be expected... /. has lot of users and that means alot of people looking at the links.
Singh400
I think we need an official Flexbeta Downtime thread lol, we everyone can post the rants and raves etc etc.

I thought Xeon were better? Anyways, I will be on the phone today with the people from the Planet to see what they would suggest. Yes, we are able to handle a /. effect, but that was a backtoback /..
oubipaws
You guys maintain the servers yourself or are you using some other company to do it through?

It's great to get slashdotted though.. brings more users to the site smile.gif

Access Denied
Would a flood control like 1 post every X seconds by a user type setup help? Some sites I visit won't allow clickage of requests within X seconds. Dunno if that is even in the same partition, lol. I am a severe noob boob when it comes to things like /. which I just now heard of, lol. laugh.gif
gdogg
better off going with dual opertrons 252's
nvyseal4u
the server is not the problem, its our SQL connections. If you have over 1000 folks and only 100 SQL connections allowed at 1 time, plus all the normal traffic, it will take you down!
BlueScreenOfDeath
soooo lets increase the sql connections so it dont happen again lol
oubipaws
Why is the number of SQL Connections set so low? Just for bandwidth purposes?
BlueScreenOfDeath
kinda like to know myself...we get thousands of hits and we have it set low?
nvyseal4u
Actually its probably not low. But look at the SQL connections like a telephone company. Everything works fine, but in an emergency like an earthquake where everyone is using the phone systems all at once, the phone system works, but it may take some time to get a dialtone or even through to the person your calling, sometimes you may not even be able to get through because of a trunk busy signal

Except in that analogy the "earthquake" was slashdot lol.
Lee_Mann
Slashdoted again today we really need to find a way to prevent that from happening smile.gif other then just not posting any news tongue.gif

Now I'll never get to find out which version of FF I should download. On the other hand, we will at least get to have The History of Flexbeta:

3:15 Article on FF history posted on Flexbeta
3:19 Slashdot posts article about Flexbeta's article
3:20 Smoke starts coming from Flexbeta
3:21 Sparks fly from Flexbeta
3:22 Feeding tube is removed from Flexbeta
3:23 Flexbeta is dead. R.I.P.
bmxer_xxx

egotistic bastards...sorry we cant "Afford" a uber server to withstand such an flood of hits. Now if they WANT to buy us a totally kick a$$ server then tell them they can but id like to see it reversed on them for once and see how they like it.

bmx...being slashdotted means this:
theres a site thats significantly bigger than all the beta communities...thats slashdot.org ...all it is is a news feed yanking news from other sites. When we post an article , and it gets put on slashdot we get /.ed ...means we get a TON of hits and visitors but its usually too much for our poor server to manage.
bmxer_xxx
and what is google x anyone?
