I'm moving to Virginia in a few weeks. I'm trying to look at alternatives of transporting my stuff. The cheaper, the better. So far, the solution is to rent a uhaul 4x8 and stick it to my Focus. That's gonna add up to about 300 in total since I need to get a towbar installed on my car (150) and then rent the trailer (150).
I don't know about the cost of other methods but they are shipping or cargo transport which involves putting my stuff in 2 or 3 barrels and sending them on a plane, train or ship. I have NO idea how to even start finding places that do this. I've googled it and that hasn't helped at all. I'm about to pick up the phone book...
Before I do though - any of you have experience with moving across the country? I don't have too much stuff, that's why it's not necessary to get a 'mover' or freigh truck; it's like a single room of things.....gonna leave my PC desk but I wanna take my dresser and my chester drawer cuz' they're nice but I don't think they'll fit into the 4x8 with the other things I need to take. If I found another way that costed the same 300 or so dollars then all I'd really have to take in my car is my PC, my PC stuff, my electronics and my DVDs (these things stay with me). This stuff all fits into my trunk so it's all good.

Any idea or suggestions?

Off topic* already

one thing in moving that i always like to make sure of is that the broadband is already up and going so when i move in I dont have to wait a week for it to get setup. it has happened to me before havn't checked ahead and you have to wait forever.

becuase we all know how much not being connected sucks. lol

about the transportation I have always had someone to help me out moving (with their own trailer or truck) so i wouldn't know the best method really sorry

speaking of being connected, it's all about who you know. U can get one of those big 18 wheelers to carry your cargo but not sure about the cost for them to do it.

I'd say Uhaul is probably the way to go for you.
I don't think you would need a towbar, ask them if they have tow dolley's. It just hooks up to the back of the UHaul truck, then you pull the front two tires of your car onto the dolly and strap it down, take it out of gear and roll on down the highway.
The only way I got shafted by paying too much to uhaul is when I did not return the truck on the day I said I would, you can get them real cheap for a one day trip, just ask around to different uhaul renters.

Lee....not offtopic at all. And yes! Believe me brohan....i already made my wife order the cable internet and dvr upgrades to go into the new apt. we're getting. After 3 months of 56k, I REFUSE to go another second with dialup if I can help it.
Omega. I didn't explain myself well enough I guess. Since it's 1 room of stuff, I'm getting a uhaul trailer which is 4x8; the towbar is so I can hook it up to my car. If I was actually getting a uhaul truck, I wouldn't have an issue. I'd just throw it all into the truck and then hook up my car, as you said. Getting a truck however, costs over 1000, which I don't think is really worth it. Not like I'm taking 2 or 3 rooms of furniture that would be worth that kind of cash.....that's why I'm trying to find alternatives to the 300 uhaul solution.

thats the only other way i can see you saving money and doing it is by uhaul. Anyone else will cost u 10x more and with the uhaul trailer u make the decisions and u know that your stuff is safe cause your transporting it, not someone else.

I was hoping someone knew about shipping by plane or train or something. Oh well. Uhaul it is then.

dang man, When I got my uhaul truck about 2 years ago. I got the full size truck, like the ford f-350 size, and it was only about 100-150 bucks. I had to put a 300 dollar deposit but I got that back. I only traveled a little over 400 miles but it was worth it. I have had friends send baggage and things by plane and all I have heard is that it wasn't worth it, but that's their story.

Wow! That was cheap! It's like 89c a mile. If I got a truck it'd be a 20 dollar a day truck, so I think what UHAUL does is give you a quote for like 5 days....
No Deposit +
5days@20=100
1050miles@.89c= roughly 900
+ Tax = Too much money. smile.gif
