hi all !

i have a small problem with mandrake ... i am pretty new to linux. i have installed suse linux before and everything worked fine but i wanted to try other versions because i did not really like suse !

problem :

i have a cable modem with broadband internet ... dhcp ist enabled but ifconfig command tells me i got no ip .. if i try to activate it again mandrake crashes ! i don´t need any login for the connection !

if i put in the ip manually the connection tells me i am connected but still there is no answer if i ping an ip or and webpage !

i have read some threads here and i heard something about drake ... sorry i have not found that!

can somebody tell me what i could do to make it work ?

many thanks in advance ! smile.gif

Is your cable broadband modem compatable with mandrake linux? check the system requirements or support via the manufactorers website

That should not matter at all... as the modem is doing is sending out a ip address to whatever hosts picks it up.

@derraecher... first question....are you running behind a router? If so, things will be really easy tongue.gif If not, I can write a script that should help you setup your internet and you can run it smile.gif

Im not to sure guys, i used to connect via a Alcatel Speedtouch ADSL modem, and that was only compatable with Windows and only REDHAT linux, other than them OS's it wouldnt work.

I could be wrong....

eth0 is my other onboard card but i don´t use that one ! the 3com card is for internet connecten ! thanks all !
oubipaws
Something simple, try changing the ethernet cable from the eth1 card to the eth0 card and you do a 'ipconfig /release' and 'ipconfig /renew'
Then see if anything is different... Linux might not be liking that 3com card (which would be odd)

Those commands aren't the same in linux. Your best bet is to su to root and execute "/etc/init.d/network restart"
oubipaws
my bad.... 'ifconfig /release' and 'ifconfig /renew'

You can't use ifconfig as if it were ipconfig in Windows, the /release and /renew options aren't viable with ifconfig in Linux.

This is a RedHat only script as far as I know. I can tell you for sure that script doesn't exist in Gentoo.

Ok, now to the real point of the post...

derraecher, you look like you're tring to use IPV6 instead of IPV4 wich is the standard version across the internet right now. You can see this here:
CODE
eth1 Protokoll:Ethernet Hardware Adresse 00:01:02:1C:56:82
inet6 Adresse: fe80::201:2ff:fe1c:5682/64 Gültigkeitsbereich:Verbindung

Chances are since you're set to use IPV6 your router or ISP isn't able to provide you with an IPV6 IP address. Change over to IPV4 and you should be good to go.

I've never had a problem using the /release /renew in my gentoo box sad.gif

I didn't even notice the ipv6... I hate that crap... I hate hexadecimals...they drive me insane sad.gif
That would definently be a problem right there.

What syntax do you use? After seeing your post I tried to get it to work on my end with:
ifconfig eth0 /release
ifconfig eth0 /renew
ifconfig /release
ifconfig /renew

None of these work for me so if you have it working I'd be interested in seeing the syntax.
oubipaws
I can run any of the following:
ifconfig eht0 /up
ifconfig eth0 /down
ifconfig /release (only one nic card on laptop)
ifconfig /renew

Now I'm really confused... are you running gentoo also?

Correct, I'm running ~x86 on my Gentoo box. I know that the up and down switches work, however they definitely don't work with Windows style / in front of them. You need to use them like:
CODE
ifconfig eth0 up
or
CODE
ifconfig eth0 down

When I try with the release and renew (minus the /) I get:
CODE
ifconfig eth0 release
release: Unknown host
ifconfig: `--help' gives usage information.

and
CODE
ifconfig eth0 renew
renew: Unknown host
ifconfig: `--help' gives usage information.

hi thanks alot for the info ! i don´t really know what ipv6 or ipv4 means ! nor i know how i can set it up different !

if you could tell me that would be awesome ! smile.gif thanks alot !
JjcampNR
To be honest I've never run Mandrake so I'm not really sure where that particular setting would lie.

The only other thing I could suggest is doing the following as root:

echo "net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling=0" >> /etcsysctl.conf
echo "alias net-pf-10 off" >> /etc/modprobe.conf
echo "alias ipv6 off" >> /etc/modprobe.conf

Reboot and see if your network comes up. If it doesn't come up you may want to try installing (or re-installing) the packages:

resolvconf, pump, and dnsmasq

If this doesn't work let me know and I'll try and do some research on the problem. Keep me updated on if you're up and running or not.

did not work sad.gif but i have installed fedora now ... don´t like it too much but at least it solves two problems ( external hd works and internet )

funny though that the installation was about 3gb !!! well i will try to learn linux now and then go back to mandrake or just try gentoo or something similiar i want to get to know it until i can use on of the live cds so i have a clean install not like the one i have now tongue.gif 3 gb tongue.gif thats alot more than windows has !

thanks alot for all the help !
JjcampNR
I don't think a 3GB install is too crazy now a days, the size of just my Windows directory on C: is 2.1GB, so I'm sure the full WinXP install is at least 3GB. Sorry to hear that didn't work for you, just remember next time you install if you have the choice between IPV4 and IPV6, you want IPV4. If you decide to install Gentoo I'll be more than happy to help you if you get stuck.
