How is it not free? I have never paid for a copy of Quicktime that I have downloaded from apple.com website. You only pay for the Pro versions, and how is it better? It is still the quicktime codec, just doesn't come with the quicktime player.
You can download quicktime or quicktime alternative, whichever you prefer, and just have it set to play through another media player.

QuickTime Sucks hard

. Use QuickTime Alternative and Real Alternative and your problems are over.

The problem with players like Quicktime, Real, or Windows Media is that they want to make it so that if you want to play their ridiculous format, you have to have their player that hijacks your file associations and startup. In that sense, yes, it's spyware.
