In the past couple of years, IBM has come a long way and now makes some excellent workstations and servers. HP has long been the leader in Servers and server appliances, but IBM has passed them with the XServer series.

Dell and Gateway have gone completely down the tubes. Dell makes the worst laptops in the world. Gateway makes a pretty good laptop, but both companies desktops are sliding fast. Dell used to have awesome tech support but now, in an effort from Dell to cut costs, the tech support is farmed out and is now based in India. The tech support is terrible.

My workstation:

IBM Intellistation Z
Dual 3.2 Xeon Processors
2 GB Kingston memory
2 x 72 GB 15,000 rpm IBM SCSI hard drives (Raid 1)
Nvidia Quadro FX 3000 Video card (2 DVI outputs)
Windows XP Pro SP1

Fantastic machine......

I own, 3 HPs, 1 Gateway, and 2 customs. cool2.gif I would prefer a custom built pc by my own hands though. But if I was to buy one or recommend a pc, it would be a HP.
oswan
custom either built by me or a friend happy.gif
Gsurface
I prefer to build my own, that way I can customize it however I want. It's cheaper that way also.

I build my own machines. They turn out awsome, and run fantastic. I do use quality parts and OEM only when i need to. Im still using some systems i built years back and they give me no trouble. Intel Rules!!

internal thought:

at the moment i post this:

E-Machines [ 5 ] [35.71%]
Custom Built By Someone Else [ 3 ] [21.43%]
Custom Built By You (Homemade) [ 2 ] [14.29%]

thinkin to ones self...jesus christ im in hell...im in *#($ hell!!!

for real tho...ive built most of my friends pc's and they love them..its cheaper, fully customized and free tech support from me biggrin.gif . the last rig i built only cost 300 bones... and it was a 1.8 P4 512 MB of ram, 60 gig hdd, and a Radeon 9200. Not bad for 300 bucks..

Well I am kind of torn on this one. Most of the time I would say a computer built by me. I have built 8 computers in the past few years for myself. Built 100+ this year for other customers.
Pre-built computers I have owned in the past 4 yrs.....
Compaq, did not like it at all,
HP, liked it but couldn't overclock or modify it enough.
emachine, laptop..... awesome laptop so far, only type of emachine i would buy, i would never buy an emachine desktop.
...and I have just purchased an Alienware for myself.

After building so many this year, and building so many for myself, I though it was someone elses turn to build me a computer.
hacker_god
i like ones i build myself, that way i know whats in it and what i can upgrade in the future....lol

Really? I have never been a big fan of Gateway, but I have had a good amount of success with Dell. I have had to ship of 3 laptops to be fixed (one was dropped, one had broken keyboard, one had broken screen) and all were repaird and returned on the 3rd day.

Its very hard to understand them, and the waits suck, but I have been happy with their product. I just bought and inspiron 8600 and enjoy it. biggrin.gif

Desktops, I'm with winwiz. I built my tower and think that is the way to go. But, like some of you know, if your friends or family find out that you are a computer geek, they ask you to build them one. I made that mistake only once and ended up supporting them through many stupid errors, so now I tell friends to buy Dell, but I'll always build mine biggrin.gif

If you want something done right, do it yourself. Nothing's better than building your own PC. It's a lot cheaper and it lasts a lot longer.

I won't build them but I will fix them, I charge accordingly also. This way it keeps the problems at bay biggrin.gif
