I know there are many users here that are multi-lingual and don't necessarily use Engish as a first language, but reading posts by some users that can't spell 95% of the words they write (summat is not a word, nor is cos). Capitalizing Every Word In A Sentence Is Also Very Annoying. Running sentences without any punctuation at all makes for a very difficult read, as does having ... after every minor thought...you know what I mean...like this...

I know asking youngins on the internet to use better grammar and spelling is like asking someone to wear a tux to a crackhouse, but come on, no one takes you very seriously if you can't even spell something or cause (see above).

I assent to that, except the language used here, excluding one forum, should be called English, albeit most of the writings here do not allude to that, making it ratherish arduous for us, who do not have English as native language or even vernacular, to ken the meanings of said posts, thus perchance leading to paucity of replies that could have possessed knowledge of the matter.


A question to all of you: Do you actually use these abbrevations and deliberate misspellings outside the Internet, e-mail and SMS messages? For instance, if you're a student, do you write exams using the same style you use here? If you have a job, do you write whatever the job requires using the same style you use here?

If not, why do you change your style here? Is adhering to proper spelling so burdensome that you need to "relax" after school / work?

~Tears of joy~ Finally, some people who understand how I feel! I thought I was the only one! I'm constantly harping about proper spelling and punctuation, which has just about driven my friends and classmates* mad. Following my belief that first impressions are the most important, I've never been able to understand why people can't take the time to make their "works of literature" look halfway presentable. We all make typographical errors (or "typo demons," as my friends and I like to call them), but when these errors become so abundant in any given sentence that they make it difficult to discern what the author is trying to say, then I say we have a problem.

I get a lot of complaints from classmates* about sounding like a language arts teacher, claiming that only old people should spell correctly. I've gotten comments such as "y you talk lik a teecher/?," "ur riting is good but ur talk norml is borng," and "u sownd gay ."

I will be a freshman attending high school next year. Juniors and seniors made these comments. You would think that these children would have grown up by now.

This brings me to one example of Severe Typo Demon Syndrome that I find particularly amusing. One day in a Michael's Craft Store, my mother went to use the restroom to find the following signs printed on each stall door: "Please do not flush diapers or sanitary napkins. Do to plumbing problems." As most of us in this thread should know, the author should have rearranged the sentence as follows: "Due to plumbing problems, please do not flush diapers or sanitary napkins." Oddly enough, previous visitors to the restroom had noticed the error as well, for each sign had been corrected in various colors of ink...

...I've always known that human beings are stupid, and this story only helps to back up my theory.

Upon returning to this restroom on another visit to the store, my mother realized that the store had printed new signs for the stall doors. There were, unfortunately, no changes made to the grammatical errors, thus proving my theory correct.

On a final note, I say we all take the time to try and prove my theory wrong. Spell correctly, pass language arts, and make the world a better place.


*classmates: things that I must have tolerance for despite the fact that I loathe every last one of them. Their ignorance is sickening, making it hard to concentrate on my daily tasks due to the nausea; they are completely oblivious to everything going on in the world around them, causing people who are easily angered (like me) to feel as if they must keep the world in order; and last but not least, they feel the need to fit into these "stereotypes" that they've created out of the desperate feeling that they need to belong to something. I have but two words to say to them... "Damn you."
