Hey Guys, Need some help. This weekend I will be moving my mom over to a new system. Currently shes on a Pentium class 120Mhz (lol), no CD burner, 1 Floppy disk, no ethernet, 336 modem no USB. My problem, she wants some of the files from her old computer. Would i be better off fooling with a zip drive to extract her old stuff from one machine (98) then putting the zip on the new machine (XP) and transfer the files? or just intalling an ethernet on the old machine and transfer the files. I believe you need a cross-over cable to connect computer to computer with no hub, is this true?
Why is this in the flame zone?
well, my sister bought the new computer for my mom, and volunteered me to do the transferring of information and to "show my mom" how to use it!! (this is like teaching a brick to jump)
1) Just who the hell does my sister think i am? Family tech support?
2) You dont know my mom and computers. This is like giving a 7 year old the keys to a car
3) Do you know how unpeaceful my life is going to be in the comming years?

Yea, just get a crossover, $5 at Staples, then transfer the files, thats the easiest way.

SOrry to hear that Navy, lol. I would also agree with the K-man and say go with the ethernet transfer, however, how big are the files your mom has? If it's just a few pics and documents, maybe you can rar them and split them into floppies. It will take sometime but you wont have to bother with installing any drivers for the NIC or messing with Windows file sharing (which is a piece of cake).

this might be a stupid question, but why not take the old HD out of the old system and install it as a slave in the new system and copy the files that way? [ this is what i do most times when i am upgradeing a persons system ] just a thought

I swear those new dells open like the hood of a car
I don't know.. are there stickers on them? If so, whoops! I honestly don't recall seeing stickers on them, I'd go ahead and crack it

no need to crack it, i'll just do a ethernet connect. (Yes their are stickers)
My sister thinks that i can install HER office program and other software without being in a software violation. Im trying to do the right thing for my mom, but its hard trying to explain this to my sister. any advice? Keep in mind this is XP

Thanks OUT, added to the list, although my mom might think that Spyware is something you put on more than something you scan for. She still calls a mouse a "RAT" lol
As for the pop-up blocker, she dont need one, she tells my dad "NO, its not your birthday" every night! lol

I dont think she needs P2P or the media player, I think WMP would work. As for the Image Editing, I dont know why she would need any of that.
