Has anyone else got their free FON router in the mail yet? I just got mine today and it totally surprised me. It's not looking to be very useful though. What I found really interesting is that this router has two SSIDs, one of them is a public one that anyone can use and the other is a private one.
Here are some pictures of this bad boy. I think this will be pretty useful if I every go somewhere that I need instant wireless setup. It comes with a really cool flat network cable also.

Haven't gotten home yet so can't check if I got mine. So basically this router will automatically try to set its self up a an access point (hotspot)?

it sets itself up as a regular AP and a hotspot... so it shows 2 SSID's, one secure for you and one open for everyone else.

This is an excerpt taken from their "Special Offer Conditions":
"Once you have received your La Fonera, your will be required to install the La Fonera and maintain it activated within the FON Community. If for any reason you are not able to do so, we ask that you kindly pass the La Fonera onto a friend who wants to share WiFi as a Fonero."
Is that the catch? You have to register the device with their network and remain a member of the FON Community?

I would hope not. I don't plan on replacing my WRT54GC with a router that is open to anyone and doesn't have port forwarding. I don't really see how they could deactivate the router if you didn't keep up with the community.

Singtel from nanny state Singapore. In the T&C, customers aren't allow to resell their Internet service for 'personal profit'. The ISP just want to earn more that's all.

Still, I want to give Fon a try when their router is more available worldwide.

It is a router. There is only one port on the back and that is for connecting it to you modem.

No. You cannot disable anything on either side of it, the public or the private side. The settings are really limited and all you can really change is SSID, the wireless key on the private side, the "firewall" you can turn on and off, and then how the router is connected to the modem.

The FON routers you have recieved, and I am waiting for, are Linksys WRT54GSV4 routers underneath!
They are easy to flash with dd-wrt and become just a normal access point/router without sharing to the world =D

With verizon it's also against the ToS agreement to "Access adult media" lol

Took more than a week for me to get mine. Took something like 3 weeks. But, who cares cause I ain't using it. You imagine this is a big sting by the RIAA/MPAA to see whos sharing what? Simply assign a code to each router and match that code to the person whom it was shipped to. Then, monitor the router for the type of packets it is sending. If it is copyrighted data, then send information to HQ including serial number of device. hummmmm.

I don't know G. That's a little paranoid, just a little. FON is backed by Google so I couldn't imagine that there'd be something like that in the system.
But, on the other hand, if someone were to get sued by the MPAA//RIAA, one could claim that they had the FON AP hooked up and someone else must have done it because one is an Internet saint.

Yeh, but see the beauty of it all. This is meant to be an access point. Even if they do trace copyrighted stuff, doesn't necessarily mean we were downloading it. If the cops come to my house I'll just tell them, some guy wirelessly accessed my internet. Anyway, these things are built to allow outsiders to connect to our internet. I don't think the they would expect to catch us doing the dirty work.
EDIT: What shadowgate929 said, I took my time typing.

That doesn't sound legal, lol. If the RIAA/MPAA were to sue based on data they had been monitoring, civil rights activists would have a field day on them, and the RIAA/MPAA would be slapped with lawsuits, limitations and citations. That would be a huge hit that I'm sure they aren't willing to take.
