Besides locking my Control Panel into the XP style (option for old style is GONE), and probably causing those BAD POOL DUMPs, it also has caused this:

Everytime I change my Desktop wallpaper, I lose the "Drop Shadows" - so I have boxes around my icon text, instead of transparent.

The option is still checked, and unchecking rechecking does not help.

SO FAR the BSs SEEM to have stopped. Have shutdown and/or restarted several times. whistle.gif

    Drop Shadows

    Just found THIS:

    Icon Shadows/Transparent on desktop
On the desktop, your icons should have a shadow on the words, and be transparent so you can see the background behind the words.
If you've lost this capability, to get it back:
Right click on the desktop, choose Arrange Icons, then click on Lock Web Items On Desktop to REMOVE the check. Your shadow and transparency will be back.

It works on work PC - drop shadows go away even though they are turned on. Gotta try it at home tomorrow.

    google.gif

FORGOT my FIRST RULE - try those damn utilities on the WORK pc FIRST - cause ONLY I USE IT - and can reinstall it any old time. IT'S FOR TESTING THESE THINGS!

The ongoing fight to UNDO what GameXP did to me.

OK - drop shadows are back. The "Lock Web Items on Desktop" was doing THAT.

    AND

I have my Classic View control panel back. Thanks to a REGEDIT I found through google.

"If ForceClassicControlPanel is set to 0, Switch to Classic View is unavailable
If ForceClassicControlPanel is set to 1, Switch to Category View is unavailable
    Click Start/Run and type REGEDIT
    Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Backup the registry key to a REG file. See here fore more information.

In the right-pane, delete the value ForceClassicControlPanel (if exists)

Repeat the same in the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Close Registry Editor and restart Windows.

AND so far - still no Blue Screens.
    dribble.gif
(I didn't even restart windows - just Ctr-ALt-Del and closed explorer - then File - New Task. Type - explorer - then >ENTER<. That re-reads the registry.)

OH - AND THIS - I DID have system restore on. I make restore point once a week. I TRIED to restore to several points BEFORE gameXP. All failed. It must have REALLY done something serious.

Hey that info helps. I installed it on my laptop to check it and it took away the tranparent background too. I also lost the ability to look at pictures with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Also when I browse a folder with pictures I can't see the pictures in thumbnail or filmstrip view. I'm trying to figure it out without formatting. It's no real big problem I just like trying to figure this stuff out. So if anyone figures that out that would be sweet.

    Windows picture and fax viewer?

    Nah.

    IRFANVIEW

Wonderful. Small. Handles HUGE numbers of formats. Great 'slideshow' function when browsing through a folder. Batch conversions...... on and on.

And I have NEVER had a serious problem - just a system BEEP with one version when it switched from one MP3 to another.

    FREE.

Be sure to DL the 'plugins' as well.

I'm likin' the program but it still doesn't show the picture thumbnail when browsing folders. All I get is the icon set for that extension.

    MAYBE this helps???

After scanning 175 images which were named book1.jpg to book175.jpg I added a few images which I renamed book book50a.jpg and book70a.jpg. I renamed the images so I could sort them by name. Now I find that several of the thumbnail images do not match the actual image. In other words if I click on the thumbnail in My Pictures in Thumbnail View a different image from the one in the thumbnail appears in the Windows and Fax Viewer window. The same thing happens when I use the Film Strip View. When I highlight the image in the film strip, a different image appears above the film strip image. My guess is that the index to the actual image has been corrupted. Can this be corrected? Or is there some other problem?

Try deleting the file called 'THUMBS.DB' in the folder where your images are (My Pictures?). Windows will create a new one next time you view the images in thumbnail view. Could be the existing thumbs.db file is corrupted.

    OR THIS:

I have created a new folder and Filmstrip does not appear.
    =====================================

Try this...right click the folder and from the menu...
    choose...Properties / Customize tab...open the
drop window and choose...Pictures / Apply / OK.

Now open the folder and go to...View...and see
if you have the Filmstrip option.

(There is also an option there to RESTORE DEFAULTS)

I dont know what has messed up my win XP ui. I am suspecting GameXP did it probably, but although i did restore some glitches like images preview not working, filmstrip not working, jpg thumbnails not working, etc there is a number of other issues that i cant fix. Is there a way to repair / restore the windows XP GUI as a whole? (or at least the issues i mention below?)

I tried [sfc /scannow] and XP repair install with no results.

Here are some of the glitches i have found so far, i am sure there are more. Highlighted by the red outlines ....

    (screenshots : http://forum.tweaks.com/forum/Topic218015-7-1.aspx)

    - second color in title bar is off
    - background color in top toolbars menu items switching colors abnormaly

I already contacted the GameXP author to provide me with a list of registry alterations their program does but no response yet

(any chance maybe GameXp is also related with that DVD / movie files playing has now some issues such as the monitor going blank reporting off range frequency or the whole desktop moving down the screen and losing the cursor or the bottom of the desktop (including the taskbar) being lost in a black horizontal zone ? .....)

This thread acts as a warning for those unfamiliar with the PoS that is GameXP. Newbies, stay clear of it...

Okay thanks for the warning guys but please refrain from restarting years old topic.

By the way, the software latest version is 1.6.1.20 which was updated on Jan 20, 2006. Talk about PoS...

I dont believe i have actually restarted the topic. Its that the program its still out there and even some people suggesting it .... (go figure. it was suggested to me by .... computer tech cousin, i should had checked the web first as i do in any other case !! )

So, in my search to find a way to fix the damages done, i stumpled upon this thread and i thought would be better to add my issues in this one rather than starting a new one, and keep all the possibly useful info gathered about it in one place. Some issues solutions mentioned some posts up here i had already fixed on my own before i found this thread but they might be still useful for many others out there, along with possible solutions to the issues i am talking about that might be posted here later

Someone should actually get that theorica site down if possible lol that program should be banned from everywhere.
    what PoS stands for?
